City Parish leaders appreciated
PENANG (Herald Malaysia): The leaders of Service Groups and BECs of City Parish were treated to a dinner at Traders Hotel, in appreciation of their service to the Church.
Forty-five leaders gathered at the hotel on Feb 21 at 6.30pm for the dinner, followed by a motivational talk on leadership and presentation of plans.
After dinner, John Dass, the Parish Pastoral Council chairperson welcomed everyone. Then Joseph Ng took over to lead in the Praise and Worship.
Johann Gregory, a member of the Parish Animating Team and a professional speaker, gave a talk on leadership, commitment and prayer life.
Johann said, “Jesus himself was a great leader, simply because he did the will of the Father. The meaning of leadership is ‘an innate drive to motivate a team or a group of people to work together to attain a certain objective or target.’
“People will listen to you, not only based on your position but on your character as well. The three main qualities for leaders are humility, responsibility and good interpersonal skills.
“To be committed, bear in mind the T.E.A. formula – time, effort, accessibility. These 3 are all equally important to be a good leader.”
He then threw three questions for the leaders to ponder on:
1. Are we willing to serve others?
2. Are we willing to help others who are in need?
3. Are we going to be more fruitful in our ministry in City Parish?
To motivate the leaders when facing challenges, he quoted from two bible passages:
Psalm 18:29, “With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall” and John 15:5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me, with me in him, bears fruit in plenty; for cut off from me you can do nothing.”
Johann also touched on prayer and encouraged the leaders to spend at least 30 minutes on prayer everyday. This can include reading of scriptures and reflection. St Paul, he said, had also encouraged us to pray as found in Romans 12:12: “Be joyful in hope, persevere in hardship; keep praying regularly.”
After Johann’s talk, the BEC leaders presented their 2013 plans.
Then Fr Dominic echoed what Johann had talked about on prayer. He said that prayer is very important. Prayer can move things.
“When we surrender to God, prayer can change things. Prayer is the key to help us in our lives. For example, just surrender any of your projects or plans to God and pray, and your plans will work out nicely.”
He thanked all the leaders for their service to the church and hoped they would continue to be committed just as he is committed to the parish plan and vision. He said that he would pray for them and hope that they would pray for him too.
“The parish depends on you. Jesus need you. I need you. Let’s all work together to make our parish a little corner of heaven where all have the right to serve and contribute. We are all called to serve in the parish and to serve is to give and receive.” — By Lucia Lai
