The theme of the celebration was ‘Let’s Walk in Faith with Jesus’.
Some 2,000 parishioners attended the evening mass in Farquhar Street, conducted in four different languages — English, Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin and Tamil.
This was to cater to the Christian believers from various ethnic backgrounds.
Holding candles and singing hymns, the congregation then walked in a 2km procession from the church to the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows in Macalister Road.
Newly installed Bishop of the Penang Roman Catholic Diocese Bishop Sebastian Francis, Church of the Assumption parish priest Rev Father Dominic Santhiyagu and Church of Divine Mercy parish priest Rev Father Martin Arlando rode on top of a lorry to lead the procession on Sunday.
Bishop Sebastian was spotted holding a gold-coloured monstrance, a vessel in which the consecrated Host is exposed for adoration by the parishioners.
Father Dominic said the procession, which was into its third year, was meant to bring everyone together.
“It was a miracle because the heavy rain stopped just before the mass began,” he said.
The procession ended at about 8pm.
