Thirty-seven confirmed at City Parish

Herald, 1 Sept. 2013

confirmationCity Parish, Penang, sees 37 candidates being confirmed on 26 Aug. 2013 at Church of Our Lady of Sorrows.

Together with Bishop Sebastian Francis, to celebrate the Mass and the Sacrament of Confirmation, were parish priest, Fr Dominic Santhiyagu and Deacon Dr Sherman Kuek.

In his homily, Bishop started off by telling the candidates that it is the Holy Spirit that makes them strong and anoint them with charisma.

He then asked what is the primary symbol of the Holy Spirit, and said that according to him, most people will say it is the dove.

“No, that’s wrong.” he said, “You got to wake up, young people. It is not the dove. It is fire. The primary symbol of the Holy Spirit is fire. Fire symbolize love. Love and truth. We pray, for fire, the spirit of love and truth to kindle in us, just like when tongues of fire came down on the apostles during Pentecost.”

In referring to Pope Francis’ closing speech during the World Youth Day, where he called on the young people to ‘make a mess, make trouble in the diocese’, he linked it to asking the Holy Spirit for a radical faith and not to be satisfied with comfort.

He also quoted from Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, who had said “The world will offer you comfort but you are not made for comfort, you were made for greatness.”

He said that as young people, they should not be satisfied with comfort but to have the desire to seek the truth and set the love of God. Thus he invited the candidates to go forth and make disciples of nations and to create a tsunami, tsunami of the Holy Spirit.
