Parishioners brave heat for walk of faith
10 June 2015
THE sweltering heat from the setting sun did not deter some 1,000 parishioners from joining the Feast of Corpus Christi (Latin for Body of Christ) celebration at the Church of the Assumption in Farquhar Street, Penang.
The evening mass was conducted in five different languages – English, Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin, Tamil and Tagalog.
Newly ordained Church of the Assumption priest Father Joachim Roberts said the procession was a witness and expression of the church members’ faith, not only as an individual but as a community.
Parishioners were seen holding candles and singing hymns. The congregation then walked for 2km from the church to the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows in Macalister Road.
Head altar server Aaron Lim, 18, said there were three stops during the procession.
“During all three stops, the altar servers will usually incense the monstrance, which is carrying the body of Christ and bells will be rung.
“Solemn hymns were also sung,” he said.
Father Joachim, Church of the Assumption parish priest Father Nelson Chitty, Cathedral of the Holy Spirit parish priest Monsignor Bernard Paul, and rector of the College General Seminary Father Gerard Theraviam rode on top of a lorry leading the procession on Sunday.
