Solemn celebration of Saturday Novena for OLS Feastday
2 October 2016
This year, City Parish chose to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows by reviving the age-old Novena devotion and traditions. From July 23 to Sept 17, parishioners and Catholics from all over Penang Island gathered at the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows (OLS) for the Solemn Celebration of Saturday Novena.
The nine Saturdays focused on each of the Seven Sorrows of Mary, Mary, Mother of Mercy and Jesus, the Mercy of God.
Parish priest Fr Nelson Chitty said the solemn Saturday Novena also included a sermonette and Benediction which is very much a part of the tradition.
“The church wants to make Mary known and to give more prominence to her through this devotion,” he said, while mentioning that it was the desire of Mother Mary herself to have this age-old Saturday Novena.
Fr Nelson also said that people will very often come to know Jesus through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
“Mother Mary is a great intercessor and protector, and as people are drawn to her through devotion, she makes Jesus known to them,” he said.
Overwhelmed by the positive response shown towards the Solemn Novena, Fr Nelson said that this will be continued on a regular basis in OLS Church every Saturday.
The parish-level feast day celebrations were held on Sept 18. Thunderstorms did not deter crowds from participating in the Eucharistic celebrations at OLS Church.
In his homily, assistant parish priest Fr Joachim Robert reflected on Mary’s seven sorrows while pointing out that she becomes a role model for us to follow.
“Just as Mary accompanied Jesus on his journey to the Cross, we too must accompany people who are in difficulties. Mary did not give up on Jesus. She was always there for him while persevering in faith and trusting in God’s promises,” he said.
Fr Joachim also thanked those involved in preparations for the feast day celebration. After Mass, the parishioners gathered at the hall for a breakfast fellowship.
