Washing of feet marks Holy Thursday

GEORGE TOWN: Migrants from Vietnam and the Philippines, students from Sabah and Sarawak and the disabled were among 12 “disciples” who got their feet washed and kissed at a Holy Thursday mass at the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows here.

The church in Macalister Road was packed with parishioners who prayed solemnly at the mass, which re-enacted the Last Supper when Jesus Christ gathered with his disciples the night before he was crucified.

Parish priest Monsignor Aloysius Tan said: “The washing of the feet symbolises an act of servitude, that we should reach out to the poor and marginalised within our community.”

Monsignor Tan said Holy Thursday was the commemoration of the Last Supper of Jesus Christ.

Holy Thursday also marked the beginning of the Paschal Triduum, a three-day period recalling the passion, death, burial and resurrection of Christ.

After Good Friday today, Christians will mark Holy Saturday tomorrow followed by Easter celebration on Sunday.
